For over 25 years Signature has supported the artistic community in the Kalamazoo area. Signature is a co-operative of professional artists and crafts-persons who meet for personal growth and for the promotion of art. Meeting monthly at members' homes and studios, we share, critique, appreciate, communicate and share resources. Signature also holds group exhibitions. The Elements! A group exhibit.
www.artcenterofbattlecreek.org April 2-26, 2008 Opening Reception: April 6, 2-4 PM When Signature decided to do a show based on the concept ELEMENTS, 26 artists’ minds began to mull over what “elements” mean to their work. Artists like Mark Cassino, and Amy Culp immediately thought of the traditional break down of the universe into FIRE, WATER, AIR and EARTH. But other artists took a difference tack.Brenda Mergen thought of the elements that are the building blocks for her weavings – the threads, the color, the texture, the threading pattern on the loom. Judy Jansen began to consider the elements that go into designing and working with metals in jewelry –pearls, gem stones, glass + copper, brass, silver and gold. Similarly Susan Badger and others were drawn to the ELEMENTS OF DESIGN – line, color, texture, symmetry, and so forth. . . . Others defined the elements as the outdoors, “being out in the elements,” and their work reflects the landscape and the atmosphere. Anytime you have a group of artists brainstorming on an idea, the boundaries are stretched, the concepts are enlivened and the final products are a treat. |
